Speed up your migration from one Synology NAS to another when using the Migration Assistant

I write this post because I was not happy with the migration speed of my old DS420+ NAS to my new DS920+. I was in need of a solution to speed this process up. With those steps i was able to bring the estimated time to completion down from 3 days to 10 hours.

Requirements:

  • Source Synology NAS
  • A destination Synology NAS
  • Your destination NAS needs two network interfaces (required for one tip in the list)
  • Both need to satisfy the requirements of Synology
    • The DSM version required for the source device is DSM 6.0 or above. However, we recommended upgrading to DSM 6.0.3, 6.1.7, or 6.2.2.
    • The DSM version required for the destination device is DSM 6.2.2 or above.
    • Migration Assistant supports certain Synology NAS models as source/destination devices. Please refer to this article to learn more.

Steps to increase the speed

  • Directly connect your NAS to the other NAS.
    • Go to your Network settings and set the Network Adress to x.x.x.1 and x.x.x.2, the subnet masks to 255.255.255.0 and leave the rest empty.
    • Put in the new adress in the migration adress of your source NAS
  • Make sure not jobs are running on the source NAS (Control Panel -> Task Scheduler) and disable every job.
  • Stop running pakets on the source NAS
  • Make sure Photostation is not creating thumbnails in the background, if it is end the process (postpone it)

  • Disconnect the other network interface physically from the source NAS, to avoid any connections not relatet to the migration
